【Hokuto Cherry Blossom Corridor】
Hokuto City has many famous cherry blossom viewing spots!
◆ Hōkiji Temple's Weeping Cherry Tree
The weeping cherry tree at Hōkiji Temple is estimated to be 300 years old and reaches a height of 12 meters!
It is extremely rare for a weeping cherry tree to grow this large in Hokkaido. The characteristic feature of this tree is its massive, curved branches, covered in cherry blossoms.
◆ Matsumae Domain's Hekirichi Jinya Ruins
Built by the Matsumae Domain in 1855, this is Japan’s first Western-style star-shaped fortress and is designated as a historic site.
Stroll from the Jinya Ruins along an 800-meter path lined with cherry blossom trees and explore the Honjin area, which retains the historical atmosphere of the period.
<Cherry blossom season: Late April – Early May (Please check with the Hokuto City Tourism Association for updates.)>
◆ Cherry Blossom Avenue along the Ōno River
A 300-meter-long path lined with Somei Yoshino cherry trees forms a beautiful cherry blossom tunnel!
In 1959, local residents initiated a tree-planting campaign to commemorate the marriage of the Crown Prince of Japan.
After about five years of transplanting and nurturing seedlings, the townspeople successfully planted cherry trees along this avenue.
<Cherry blossom season: Late April – Early May (Please check with the Hokuto City Tourism Association for updates.)>
◆ Goryōkaku Park
※ Entrance to Goryōkaku Tower requires a separate fee of 1,200 yen, to be paid by the traveler.
This star-shaped fortress, Goryōkaku, is a national special historic site designated by the Japanese government.
It was opened to the public as a park in 1914, with 5,000 cherry trees planted at that time.
Today, it is one of Hokkaido’s most famous cherry blossom spots, attracting many visitors from both Japan and abroad each year.
<Cherry blossom season: Late April – Mid-May (Please check with Goryōkaku Tower for updates.)>
※ The cherry blossom season may vary depending on weather conditions. Early or delayed blooming may occur.
