Takato Castle Ruins Park
Located in Nagano Prefecture, Takato Castle Ruins Park is renowned as one of Japan’s top 100 cherry blossom viewing spots and is hailed as the “Best Cherry Blossoms in Japan.” The park features approximately 1,500 cherry trees of the unique local variety called Takato Kohigan Sakura. Compared to the common Yoshino cherry blossoms, these blooms are smaller but have a deeper pink hue. When the entire park is in full bloom, it transforms into a breathtaking landscape bathed in vivid light pink, creating a dreamlike atmosphere.
- Typical Blooming Period: Early to mid-April
Hida Takayama Old Town
Takayama Old Town, a famous historical castle town in Japan, flourished as a merchant district. The three main streets—Kamimachi, Nakamachi, and Shimomachi—are collectively known as the "Old Streets." Walking along these streets, visitors can admire latticework architecture, flowing water channels, and sake breweries marked by cedar ball decorations called sugidama. These features reflect a rich traditional atmosphere.
The town is a symbol of Takayama's history and culture. In Kamimachi, nostalgic candy shops, traditional craft stores, and eateries offering local delicacies like gohei mochi attract many visitors. Nakamachi, on the other hand, preserves shops essential to daily life, such as rice cake vendors, antique shops, and stationery stores. The streets retain the charm of the past, making it a hidden gem for those who want to experience local culture deeply.
Takayama Festival
The Takayama Festival, held twice a year in Gifu Prefecture, is one of Japan’s three most beautiful festivals alongside Kyoto’s Gion Festival and Chichibu Night Festival. With a history spanning over 400 years, its main highlight is the grand procession of gorgeously decorated floats, resembling moving art museums. These floats feature karakuri mechanical dolls performing traditional plays, showcasing the artisans’ exceptional craftsmanship.
During the festival, visitors can enjoy local street food and handicrafts at various stalls, providing not only a visual feast but also a taste of authentic Japanese festive culture.
- Spring Sanno Festival: Held annually on April 14 and 15
Magome-juku
Located at the entrance to the Kiso Road and surrounded by the high peaks of the Hida region, Magome-juku was once an essential stop along the route connecting Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto. Its well-preserved historical ambiance allows visitors to feel as though they have stepped back into the Edo period. The cobblestone street, built along a slope, is lined with nostalgic houses and shops, free from the distraction of overhead wires, offering unspoiled scenery.
Visitors can find traditional inns and specialty souvenir shops here, as well as seasonal landscapes that enhance the experience of Japan’s cultural and natural heritage.
Shirakawa-go
Located in the Hida region, Shirakawa-go is a village celebrated for its iconic gassho-zukuri houses. Designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1976 and added to UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage List in 1995, it showcases Japan’s pristine rural scenery.
Nestled in the Hida Mountains with the Shogawa River flowing through it, Shirakawa-go is known as one of Japan’s heavy snowfall areas. In winter, the village is often isolated by deep snow, creating a remote and mystical charm.
Residents adhere to the principles of “Don’t sell, don’t rent, don’t tear down”, preserving the traditional architecture and the village’s overall appearance. The spirit of mutual assistance, known as “Yui”, is central to the community, with villagers collaborating on activities such as repairing the thatched roofs of the gassho-zukuri houses. These wooden structures, designed to withstand heavy snowfall, transport visitors to a timeless world of Japanese tradition and culture.
