Ishinomori Manga Museum
This is Japan's largest-scale manga museum, vividly recreating the world of works created by Shotaro Ishinomori, the "King of Manga," whose famous creations include Cyborg 009 and Kamen Rider. In addition to displaying precious original drawings, the museum has dedicated areas for each of Ishinomori's works and offers a variety of clever exhibits and interactive facilities that allow visitors to fully enjoy the experience.
The "Kamen Rider World" area showcases the masks of various generations of Kamen Riders, making it an exciting space not only for children but also for older fans of the franchise.
The museum also houses a library with approximately 6,000 manga books, a theater that plays original animations, as well as a café and a souvenir shop, among other facilities.
Shotaro Ishinomori and the Ishinomori Manga Museum
Shotaro Ishinomori was born in Naka Town (now Tome City), Tome District, Miyagi Prefecture. He debuted as a manga artist in 1954 with Nijiiro Tenshi (Rainbow-Colored Angel), and went on to create many popular works, leaving a profound impact on Japan's tokusatsu (special effects) and animation industries.
During his student years, he frequently visited movie theaters in the Nakase area of Ishinomaki, which led him to decide to build a museum in the city center of Ishinomaki to invigorate the local area. The museum’s exterior design was inspired by a spaceship, reflecting Ishinomori’s own vision.
In 2011, when the Great East Japan Earthquake struck, the museum's building in the Nakase area, located near the old Kitakami River mouth, was impacted by the tsunami, with floodwaters reaching up to 6.5 meters on the first floor. Although many exhibits were washed away, valuable original drawings and materials were preserved, as they were stored in exhibition spaces above 8 meters high, a safeguard inspired by the lessons of a previous tsunami more than a century ago.
The museum’s exhibits emphasize entertainment and dynamic effects, aiming to convey the fun of dreams and manga to its visitors.
Additionally, the route from JR Ishinomaki Station to the museum is called the "Ishinomaki Manga Road," and it features numerous character statues created by Ishinomori. These statues are hidden in locations like benches and mailboxes, inviting visitors to enjoy a treasure hunt along the way.
