Nara Park
Located near Mount Wakakusa, which offers panoramic views of Nara, this park is home to the largest population of free-roaming deer. When they see you holding deer crackers, they'll often come right up to you to be fed!
Every January, the traditional "Wakakusa Yamayaki" (Grass Burning Festival) is held here.
Kasuga Taisha Shrine (admission at your own expense)
Part of the UNESCO “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara”, this shrine is also home to a popular Manyo Botanical Garden, which features over 200 species of plants mentioned in ancient Japanese poetry.
From late April to early May, the wisteria blossoms are in full bloom, adorning the entire shrine grounds.
Todaiji Temple (admission at your own expense)
Also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site listing for “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara” (designated in 1998).
Inside the temple stands the Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden) — the world’s largest wooden building, measuring 57 meters wide and 50 meters deep, and enshrining a 15-meter tall bronze Buddha.
Other notable structures in the temple complex include:
-
Nandaimon Gate with its famous Nio guardian statues
