Nagaoka Fireworks Festival

The Nagaoka Fireworks Festival is one of Japan’s three major fireworks festivals with a long history dating back to the early 20th century. It was first held in the early 1900s and, since 1951, has taken place annually on August 2nd and 3rd to commemorate the victims of the 1945 Nagaoka air raid and to pray for post-war recovery. The event is held along the Shinano River, starting with white “White Chrysanthemum” fireworks as an opening, symbolizing remembrance for those who died during the air raids.

The festival’s most famous display is the enormous “Three-Shaku Fireball” (3 shaku = approx. 1 meter in diameter), which explodes at high altitude and can reach a diameter of up to 650 meters—the largest fireworks allowed by regulation! There are also intense, rapid-fire displays similar to Niagara Falls, creating a sea of fireworks that resembles a grand bridge in the sky, illuminating the night sky impressively, leaving viewers with unforgettable memories.

Finally, there is the “Rebirth Phoenix,” a symbol of resilience, which is launched from six different locations simultaneously, blooming in the sky like a phoenix spreading its wings. Witnesses are often left speechless, immersed in the magnificent fireworks display!

Once you arrive near the venue, a guide will escort you to your assigned seats.
Before the fireworks begin, you are free to explore the nearby night market to enjoy local foods.
Because of the large crowds, please keep your valuables with you at all times.
Seats in Venue B are arranged by the company; your specific seat placement will be assigned. Please be aware of this.

Kamikōchi (“The Land of the Gods”)

Kamikōchi is located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, surrounded by mountains such as the Hotakadake and the Yakedake. The Azusa River runs through it, creating a unique natural landscape. During summer, Kamikōchi is a popular mountain resort, known for its pleasant climate and stunning mountain scenery.

The famous hiking route from “Taisho Pond” to “Kappa Bridge” and “Myōjin Bridge” offers a breathtaking journey. Beginners are recommended to stick to the “Taisho Pond–Kappa Bridge” route, while experienced hikers can venture further to “Kappa Bridge–Myōjin Bridge,” where they can enjoy the mystical beauty of Myōjin Pond.

When choosing your route, please consider your physical ability and the return time to avoid delays or injuries.

Taisho Pond
Formed naturally after the eruption of Mount Yake in 1915, which dammed part of the Azusa River, Taisho Pond offers magnificent views reflecting the distant Hotaka Peaks. It feels like stepping into a fantasy world.

Kappa Bridge
Kappa Bridge is an iconic structure in Kamikōchi, built using wood from the Azusa River banks. The scenery from the bridge varies with weather, offering different perspectives. The bridge gained fame after being mentioned in Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s novel “Kappa,” making it one of the region’s most recognized landmarks.
