Arashiyama Scenic Train (Saga Arashiyama → Kameoka, approx. 25 minutes)

The Arashiyama Scenic Train, originally named the Sagano Scenic Railway, is one of Kyoto’s best-preserved vintage trains! It offers a special and unmissable slow-paced way to travel through Arashiyama. The train runs gently along the scenic Hozu River gorge, covering a total distance of 7.3 kilometers. A one-way trip takes about 25 minutes, and the round trip around 1 hour.

Arashiyama is famous for its cherry blossom pink and maple leaf red colors. In early spring and late autumn, the area is painted in shades of pink-white and fiery orange-red respectively. During midsummer and midwinter, it transforms into lush green and snowy white landscapes. The changing colors of the four seasons almost make one forget the original mountain hues.

Hozu River Boat Cruise

Hozu River is one of the popular river valleys in Kyoto, located between Kameoka city and the Togetsu Bridge in Arashiyama. It is a famous sightseeing spot known also because of the Arashiyama train (Sagano Scenic Railway).

The Hozu Gorge features massive rocks, boulders, and rapids throughout. The river twists and turns several times through the valley, forming a shape resembling the Chinese character "几" from a bird’s eye view. Visitors can board an inflatable boat near JR Kameoka Station to enjoy a thrilling river ride. Along the way, you’ll encounter spectacular rock formations such as Eboshi Rock and Lion Rock. The ride is full of excitement with rapids, narrow channels, turns, and calm stretches. Occasionally, you may even see the Arashiyama train passing by halfway up the mountain.

While the upper river’s swift currents keep you focused on the adventure, the lower river opens up to reveal ancient buildings on cliff edges, beautiful spring cherry blossoms, and autumn maple leaves. Sometimes you’ll witness a misty, almost magical scenery filled with water vapor.

Free Time in Arashiyama & Lunch on Your Own & Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

Arashiyama, located west of Kyoto city center, has been a favorite villa area for nobles since the Heian period. Its name frequently appears in historical stories and classical literature. Due to the large areas of wild cherry blossoms and maple trees along the Katsura River every spring and autumn, it has long been a popular tourist spot.

The whole Arashiyama area centers around the Togetsu Bridge, which spans the Katsura River. The bridge’s name originates from an ancient poem by Emperor Kameyama describing the moon crossing the bridge like a full moon passing by. Although Togetsu Bridge looks like a wooden bridge, today it is a modern reinforced concrete structure allowing car traffic, with traditional wooden railings to match the surrounding scenery. The Katsura River section near Togetsu Bridge is also locally called Oigawa River (大堰川).
