【Attraction Highlights】
Lake Toya
Located in southwestern Hokkaido, Lake Toya (Tōyako) is part of Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Formed by frequent volcanic eruptions in the early 20th century, the lake has a broad surface and relatively low outer crater walls (200–500 m), giving it an open and expansive feel. Remarkably, it does not freeze even in winter, making it the northernmost non-freezing lake in Japan. Its waters remain clear and calm throughout the year.
Showa Shinzan & Bear Ranch
Showa Shinzan is a volcanic lava dome formed by eruptions in the early Showa era. Originally 270 m high, tectonic activity raised it to its current height of 402 m. Still considered a “growing mountain,” it is one of the world’s rare lava dome volcanoes. White steam continues to rise from its reddish slopes.
The adjacent Bear Ranch houses around 100 purebred Hokkaido brown bears, separated into age-specific areas. These bears, accustomed to humans, can appear playful and endearing. Visitors can interact with them closely at a special observation room, separated only by a small window—close enough to feel their breath and sense their power.
Noboribetsu Hell Valley (Jigokudani)
A dramatic volcanic crater formed by past eruptions, Hell Valley is known for its eerie, otherworldly landscape. Considered the symbol of Noboribetsu Onsen, it is one of Hokkaido’s most visited attractions. The valley emits dense sulfur fumes and features over ten different types of hot springs, earning it the nickname “Department Store of Hot Springs.” Its natural springs gush an astonishing 3,000 liters per minute, feeding Noboribetsu’s many baths. Despite its barren surface, the valley provides waters with powerful therapeutic properties.
Lake Shikotsu
This caldera lake boasts a shoreline of 40 km and depths of up to 360 m, making it Japan’s second-deepest lake. Surrounded by steep peaks such as Mt. Eniwa and Mt. Tarumae, its vigorous water circulation prevents freezing even in the coldest winters, designating it the northernmost non-freezing lake in Japan.
Mitsui Outlet Park Sapporo Kitahiroshima (winter visits)
Hokkaido’s largest outlet shopping mall, featuring international and Japanese brands, specialty food shops, and local souvenirs. Enjoy authentic Kyoto Uji matcha desserts at Chasho Morita-en or browse the Dōmin Farm Shop for fresh seafood, seasonal produce, and unique Hokkaido condiments. A paradise for shoppers and food lovers alike.
Lake Toya Sairo Observatory
Situated on the lake’s western shore, this lookout point offers sweeping views of Lake Toya, Nakajima Island, Mt. Usu, and Showa Shinzan. Visitors can also enjoy Hokkaido delicacies such as rich cream, smooth yogurt, and the famous Balloon Milk Pudding—a must-try treat available only in Hokkaido.
Lake Toya Hot Spring Town
After lunch, enjoy a free footbath or handbath around the hot spring town—perfect for warming up in winter. Bring your own towel! On clear days, you can see Mt. Yotei, also called “Ezo Fuji,” for its resemblance to Mt. Fuji. The lakeside also features fun art installations, ideal for relaxed photo opportunities.
Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival (seasonal)
Held annually at Lake Shikotsu, part of Shikotsu-Toya National Park. The lake is the largest in Hokkaido and the second deepest in Japan. Fed by surrounding volcanoes, its waters remain unfrozen year-round. Each winter, festival organizers spray lake water onto structures to create ice sculptures and towers.
By day, they shimmer with the natural “Lake Shikotsu Blue” color; by night, they glow with colorful illuminations, creating a magical atmosphere.
