Setouchi Triennale – An International Art Festival on the Islands of Seto Inland Sea
The Setouchi Triennale is a contemporary art festival held once every three years on the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. First launched in 2010, the festival spans approximately 100 days and is divided into three seasons: Spring, Summer, and Autumn. Visitors can experience the unique charm of Setouchi in different seasons. The festival attracts around one million visitors from Japan and abroad, making it one of Japan’s most representative international art festivals.
Under the theme of "Restoration of the Sea," the festival encourages visitors to explore different islands through art, interact with artists, local residents, and volunteers, and immerse themselves in the natural beauty, island culture, and daily life of Setouchi. This unique integration of art and local communities has resonated with people from around the world.
Historically, the Seto Inland Sea has been an important maritime route, where passing ships have brought in new cultures and traditions, blending with the islands' original customs to create a distinctive landscape and heritage. However, with globalization, modernization, and urbanization, island populations have been declining, aging issues are worsening, and local vibrancy is diminishing, leading to the gradual disappearance of the islands' uniqueness. The Setouchi Triennale aims to revitalize the harmony between nature and humanity on the Seto Islands and transform the Seto Inland Sea into a "Sea of Hope" for all regions worldwide.
